I Saw Black Clouds (2024) Review

GHOST DOG FILMS, the British independent film and video game company has released a feature film version of their award-winning video game I SAW BLACK CLOUDS released in 2021 for Playstation, Xbox, Switch, PC, Mac & iOS.

After the unexpected death of a close friend, Kristina (Nicole O’Neill) returns to her hometown looking for answers only to unearth a string of dark secrets. She soon realises her life is also in danger the closer she gets to the truth.

I have read online that when viewed via the Steam platform I SAW BLACK GHOSTS allows the viewer to choose your own narrative that lead to one of four different endings. The preview copy I received had the narrative chosen for you and fortunately I was incredibly happy with that choice.

Writer/ Director Iain Ross-McNamee (who had previously directed both THE SINGING BIRD WILL COME (2015) and CRUCIBLE OF THE VAMPIRE (2019) for Ghost Dog Films) has crafted a dark and unsettling tale. The bleached-out visuals and aural soundscape help contribute to building a sense of unease and tension that gets under the skin.

Our lead character Kristina (Nicole O’Neill) is advised not to follow or do as I do by the ghost of Emily (Carla Cresswell) but goes ahead and ignores the advice and does both anyway. Normally such ignorance and stupidity would jar but here we are pleased that Kristina went ahead and did as she wanted to do as past secrets are unearthed and a feeling of dread increases. I SAW BLACK GHOSTS hits all the right marks and whilst never exceptional you can’t help loving what plays out onscreen.
