Hundreds of Beavers (2023) Review
In this silent supernatural epic, a drunken applejack salesman is thrust into the frigid wilderness. Can he go from Zero to Hero, become North America’s greatest fur trapper, and defeat hundreds of beavers?
Described as an ‘underground anarchic epic from the team behind LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER’, ‘HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS’ is screening at the Fantasia International Film Festival on July 28th and 31st at the Salle J.A. De Sève. It’s a near dialogue-free, black-and-white comedy epic with a LOONEY TUNES flavour that weighs in at ten minutes short of two hours runtime.
HUNDREDS OF BEAVERS stars Ryland Brickson Cole Tews as the intrepid hero of this frostbitten inventive epic, co-written by Tews and director Mike Cheslik. It’s daring to make a black-and-white, near dialogue-free flick that’s totally reliant on visual gigs and it’s pleasing to report that they have pulled off something truly unique. Whilst not as much fun or as engaging as their LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER flick – being more episodic and one-note – it maintains your interest throughout, with the energy levels onscreen never wilting or flagging.
Crammed with visual references to video games and TV there’s no end to the onscreen invention. I have read online that this took four years and 15,000 composited shots to achieve the result. Once again, the team behind LAKE MICHIGAN MONSTER have dared to make something that offers something daringly different to the norm and, like the aforementioned movie, it succeeds in doing so. It has the potential to become a cult movie and deservedly so too.
