BRITANNIA Season 3 (2021) DVD Review
The fightback against the Roman Empire, which stands at its mightiest, is on the horizon. Aulus (David Morrissey – The Missing) is joined by his wife Hemple (Sophie Okonedo – His Dark Materials) who arrives to oversee his conquest of the Britons, bringing with her mysterious and dark forces.
Cait (Eleanor Worthington-Cox –Gwen) continues her journey to becoming the prophesied “chosen one” and Mackenzie Crook’s 10,000-year-old Druid leader Veran is set to head down into the underworld for a glimpse of the future. As competing factions feud, whose prophecy will be fulfilled, and who edges closer to ruling Britannia?
Jez Butterworth’s Britannia is back for a third season and for fans of the show they’ll be pleased to know that the formula that won them over back with the first season is still intact. It’s still fun, it’s still frothy and still alludes to being psychedelic and saucy but when you strip it down of all its pretence it is simply safe TV with a smattering of strong swear words and nudity.
There’s a prolonged and handy recap at the beginning of the first episode to bring you all back up to speed before the soap-like squabbles and interactions, between the various parties at odds with each other, ensure that the minimal quest at its core will never get resolved as long as there’s still an audience prepared to tune in for more.
