Borderline (2025) Review
Starring Samara Weaving (READY OR NOT), Ray Nicholson (SMILE 2), Eric Dane (GREY’S ANATOMY), Jimmie Fails (NICKEL BOYS), Alba Baptista (WARRIOR NUN) and Patrick Cox (AQUAMAN).
From Margot Robbie and Tom Ackerley’s Luckychap Entertainment, who previously produced BARBIE and SALTBURN, comes the directorial debut from COCAINE BEAR writer Jimmy Warden.
BORDERLINE follows a dangerously persistent stalker (Nicholson) who invades the home of a ‘90s pop superstar (Weaving) with grand delusions of a wedding. With her life on the line and help from her loyal bodyguard, she must escape the stalker’s sinister grip before they tie the knot.
BORDERLINE takes its inspiration from a stalking case involving pop superstar Madonna in the 1990s where said stalker planned to slit the singer’s throat if she did not become his wife. That explains the use of one of the Material Girl’s earlier songs being used for the film’s title and it would also explain why Samara Weaving’s character is firstly such a diva and why she is no damsel-in-distress but someone altogether spunkier.
The film has pacing issues, and some moments are overegged but otherwise BORDERLINE makes for reasonable and sometimes surprising viewing. What really works in writer/director Jimmy Warden’s film though are its two leads. Both Weaving and Ray Nicholson – the latter channelling his famous father Jack’s kilowatt smile – ooze star power and charisma and together they more than make up for any shortcomings.
