Blind (2019) Review
Faye (Sarah French), a former actress that lost her vision due to botched laser eye surgery, struggles to put her life back together while living alone in her dream house in the Hollywood Hills. She soon starts opening to Luke (Tyler Gallant), a personal trainer who is mute and can only communicate through his cell phone. When a masked stranger named Pretty Boy (Jed Rowan) shows up, Faye will realize that she is not as alone as she thinks.
In 2016 DOCTOR SLEEP director Mike Flanagan gave us the rather excellent movie HUSH where a deaf woman is terrorized by a masked menace as she spends a night home on her lonesome. Now we have another spin on the standard slasher template whereby this time our protagonist is blind rather than deaf, and is a previously successful actress rather than a writer of horror stories. The film is unimaginatively entitled BLIND and comes from writer Joe Knetter and award-winning director Marcel Walz (BLOOD FEAST).
For the most part BLIND plays like a soap-opera that lead character Faye could have starred in. We are introduced to Faye and learn a bit about her from her day-to-day activities and the small circle of friends she spends her time with. Elsewhere Walz’s movie adheres strongly to the slasher template with stock characters meeting an expected grisly end before our masked killer finally makes a beeline for poor Faye. So okay, by and large there are no real surprises to be had but do keep with it as there’s a genuinely chilling ending to BLIND that makes you re-evaluate your opinion of the movie as a whole.
Until then the scares are by the number as our masked stalker (Jed Rowen) takes to removing the left eye from dolls and his victims, lurking around Faye’s home and killing off anyone that dares get in the way of the object of his affection. It’s no WAIT UNTIL DARK or SEE NO EVIL but it does have its moments, if not enough of them to elevate this to ‘must-see’ status. Keep your eyes peeled for THE GREASY STRANGLER star Michael St. Michaels as a member of the support group Faye regularly attends.
