Baghead (2023) Review
BAGHEAD, the supernatural horror-thriller from the producers of IT and BARBARIAN, is released on Digital, Blu-ray and DVD this April. Starring Freya Allan (The Witcher) and Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), the film is the feature debut of director Alberto Corredor.
Following the death of her father, a young woman inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.
BAGHEAD started life as an award-winning short film back in 2017 and it has now been expanded to this feature-length film. During the interim years a far superior horror flick, last year’s rightly acclaimed TALK TO ME, has come along with a concept at its core that just happens to share similarities with the premise on offer here. That is unfortunate for BAGHEAD as it is a tough call to stand up against such a terrific film, and one that does what BAGHEAD attempts to do, so much better.
Director Alberto Corredor’s film looks great – both the camerawork and production design are top drawer – and to begin with, BAGHEAD looks to offer serviceable, undemanding fun. However, in expanding his original short to fill up ninety-minutes worth of screentime it soon becomes apparent that not much has really been fleshed out at all. There is a lot of exposition which is perplexing as there is not much plot to get one’s head around, and sadly BAGHEAD fast becomes a bit of a bore.
BAGHEAD is available on Digital from 5th April and Blu-ray & DVD from 8th April.
