Alien Addiction (2018) Review
Alien Addiction follows Riko (Jimi Jackson) who lives in a small town in the middle of nowhere (Waikato, New Zealand). Life was pretty normal until two aliens crash landed near Riko’s house. He welcomes the aliens and together they develop an intergalactic relationship of epic proportions. Alientologist Peter Mackintosh (Thomas Sainsbury) has tracked the aliens and Riko, and plans to capture them and reveal them to the world.
In 2011 Simon Pegg and Nick Frost headlined an American studio flick called PAUL where they play two geeks who become acquainted with an alien who is not adverse to drug use. The film was pacy, had a few good laughs and enough pop culture genre references to appeal to fan-boys. What it didn’t have was the balls to go the whole hog, playing it safe so as to still appeal and be released to a mainstream audience.
Writer-director Shae Sterling’s ALIEN ADDICTION is everything that I hoped PAUL would be, happily pushing the limits to sometimes jaw-dropping effect. Initially I wasn’t sure what to make of ALIEN ADDICTION; it was fun without ever being seriously funny but that all changed following the first appearance of the aliens. It’s gross without ever being a total gross-out (fortunately) and constantly surprises by not always going in the direction you’d expect it to go.
Everyone involved hits their marks and this is by far the most fun I’ve had watching a sci-fi/comedy in quite a while, it’s Cheech and Chong channelled through Peter Jackson’s BAD TASTE or MEET THE FEEBLES and it’s destined to become a cult classic.
